About This Quote

This line is from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem "In Memoriam" that he wrote to his friend Arthur Hallam. The poem was written in 1849 and published two years later. In the poem, Tennyson describes a night with his friend after the two had enjoyed a good meal and many drinks. He decided that it was time to say goodbye and left for his home.

The next morning, following a night filled with dreams and visions, Tennyson was awakened by a knock on his door and an old friend seeking to see him before leaving London. The poet later wrote: "The shadows of the night had thickened round me."
